I will suggest, go for more Kaggle competitions and upgrade your profile with good rankings in Kaggle. Since it is about competing with world's top data scientists.
Experience in R is good, but experience in Python also can be of good advantage.
Experience in NoSQL databases will also be of great advantage.
Now I am not sure if you applied for these companies and didn't get considered or could not crack the interview. To be considered for interview, the above things will surely work. While for cracking the interview, you should be at your best with whatever knowledge and skills you reflect as per your CV.
